The official Samsung Odin is available for only Windows OS, and there is no official version of Odin for macOS and Odin for Linux systems. To fill in this gap, XDA member AdamOutler developed a Java-based tool named JOdin. JOdin3 is platform-independent and can run on Windows, Mac OS, Linux platforms.

What is JOdin?

JOdin is a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) based tool for flashing Samsung stock firmware, recovery, root packages, other files onto Samsung mobile devices.

Save the jar file on the desktop. Run MARS by double-clicking the icon. Option B: DOS shell using jar file. Save the jar file in some folder. Open a DOS shell in that folder. Rename the jar file to 'Mars.jar' for convenience. Run MARS with the DOS command java -jar Mars.jar. We provide OpenPGP signatures for every release file. This signature should be matched against the KEYS file which contains the OpenPGP keys of Tomcat's Release Managers. We also provide SHA512 checksums for every release file. After you download the file, you should calculate a checksum for your download, and make sure it is the same as ours.

JOdin3 is also referred to as Odin for Mac and Odin for Linux systems, and it runs on all three platforms – Windows, macOS, and Linux.

It is a direct port of the official Windows version of Odin and is based on the CASUAL-X project and Heimdall tool.

Why use JOdin3?

Since the official Samsung Odin isn’t available for macOS and Linux machines, JOdin is considered as the best alternative for these systems.

The best part about JOdin3 is that it doesn’t require any additional installation, all it needs is a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) installed on your system, and you can start flashing firmware using JOdin.

What is a JAR file?

A JAR file is a Java archive (JAR) file used by the Java Runtime Environment (JRE), a framework used for executing Java programs. JAR files may serve as program libraries or as standalone programs that run if the JRE is installed on the computer or mobile device.

JAR files can contain .CLASS files, application resources, and an optional manifest file (META-INF/MANIFEST.MF). They are compressed using .ZIP compression and may optionally be digitally signed using the jarsigner tool included with the Java SDK. JAR files may be created with the jar tool, and they can be accessed using Java's java.util.jarAPI.

JAR files are used for some mobile games supported by Java-enabled mobile devices. They are also used by Mozilla Firefox, Thunderbird, SeaMonkey, and Sunbird to store themes and add-ons.

NOTE: The Java Runtime Environment is also referred to as the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). Sun Microsystems, the original developers of the JRE/JVM, were acquired by Oracle.
